a5c7b9f00b 17-year-old Sean Anderson receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist. Unable to stop tracking the signal, he sets out with a small group on a journey to the mysterious island - a place few people have ever seen or lived to tell about. What they find is an island of stunning beauty, strange and threatening life forms, volcanoes, mountains of gold and more than one astonishing secret. Ever since his adventure in the center of the Earth, Sean Anderson has been looking for other places mentioned by Verne and other Vernians. He is notified about a coded message, and breaks into a satellite facility to fully receive it. With the help from his stepfather Hank (Dwayne Johnson) he decodes the message leading him to find the map that leads him to Verne's mysterious island. Along with Gabato and Kailani, Sean embarks on a mission to find his grandfather, the legendary Vernian Alexander. But unexpected problems arise as Alexander made a mistake that could change everything. Falls just short of being a really fun ride set against a story that may not be entirely original, but still seems somewhat fresh.

I liked the way the movie opened with a surly teen and his not so bad stepfather bonding over a piece of encoded message. It actually encourages some attention from the audience and not just being awed by some computer animated lizard, like we get to see later.

Then the movie slowly begins to come apart. First by introducing the comic relief character, played by the usually reliable Luis Guzman and his oh so sexy in a PG sort of way daughter, played by my least favorite actress, Vanessa Hudgens. For a moment I thought she was gonna show more, but then I remembered sadly that this is a family film. Just kidding. That wouldn't have made any difference.

Usually, when you go to see one of these films, you expect to be dazzled by the visual effects. Not so here. There isn't a single shot here that doesn't look fake. Yes, it's slick and vibrant but I actually thought that the James Mason version of Journey to the Center of Earth was much more exciting effects-wise, and that movie is from the 50s for c….sakes. The worst, the submarine bit.

As many have pointed out, this is a stand alone show, with only one character connecting this to its originator. Too bad. Dwayne Johnson is his most likable self, but Brendan Fraser is the absolute top dog when it comes to action-adventure. By the way, his upper arms look like a dinosaur's thighs. I was extremely freaked out. Nice movie for the kids to enjoy, but god awful plot and script writing - the scriptwriters should be ashamed - anyway a nice cgi jobbie for the kids (and big kids like me) but leaves you thinking how does all that evolve in 140 years…………….. ?

I have to write 10 lines or more on this film, what else do you want me to write without giving the plot away? Overall, however, it's a big, loud, 3-D-drenched jumble. It is considered a sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008) (2008) as the character of Sean Anderson is in both films, but the story is completely different with a whole new adventure so you don't have to see the first one to understand this one. Yes. A short called "Daffy's Rhapsody" is shown along with the movie in theaters. It takes the 1950 Capitol Record song "The Daffy Duck Rhapsody", sung by legendary Mel Blanc, and puts animation to it. Coincidentally, the short is falling on Daffy Duck's 75th anniversary, as the character debuted in 1937. (1) The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne, (2) Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift, and (3) Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. The three books all pertain to islands, and all three of the books shown in the film contain a partial map within the first few pages of the books. When the maps are placed on top of each other (with the compass points lined up to north) and a light is shone from beneath, the full map and coordinates of Verne's "Mysterious Island" are revealed.
